Elanco's Industry Voice | July 20, 2018

In order to effectively alleviate bovine respiratory disease (BRD) through a back-up prevention plan, it is important to evaluate the potential risk of the disease and the weight change of the cattle to select the correct dose.

Micotil® (Tilmicosin Injection) Flex offers a dose range of 1.5 to 3 mL/cwt, which means you can adjust the therapeutic dose to best meet the needs of your cattle.

Elanco Technical Consultant, DVM Dr. DVM Dr. Jacob Hagenmaier said: "When determining the most appropriate allergy dose, factors such as unknown sources and vaccination history, mixing, severe weather, and nutritional levels should be considered." "As more Risk factors are starting to come into play, and higher doses may be required."

Micotil has more than 25 years of proven results and is used in more than 100 million cattle. It is the only approved macrolide drug with a flexible dosage range in the BRD market. This allows the feedlot not only to adjust the dose according to the risk, but also to consider the weight change of a group of cattle.

Elanco conducted two flexible dose studies-one in Texas1 and the other in Colorado2-comparing 3 and 1.5 mL/cwt doses (20 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg, respectively) effect.

According to Hagenmaier, taken together, the results of these studies are a good example of how increased doses can benefit certain herds at higher risk of BRD.

"In these two studies, based on the level of mortality observed, the BRD challenge in the Texas study was even greater. This is also where the 3.0 mL/cwt Micotil dose resulted in a lower dose compared with the low dose in this study. BRD pull rate," he said. "However, regardless of the location and dose, the BRD pull rate of all cattle that received Micotil was reduced compared to the negative control."

In the Texas study, cattle that received Micotil after-effect treatment also brought a higher net return per capita at the end. Compared with untreated controls, cattle given 3.0 or 1.5 mL/cwt Micotil had an advantage of $126.02 and $86.60, respectively. 1
