Horse news, research and information

The famous horse veterinarian, Dr. Peter Rosedale, died after a brief illness at the age of 94.

Rosedale passed away on November 26. He founded the Rosedale and Partners Clinic in Newmarket, England, and is widely regarded as the "Father of Mawei Industry and Education".

Peter Daniel Rossdale OBE, MA, PhD, Drmedvet (hc Bern), DVMS (hc Edinburgh), DVSc (hc Sydney), FACVSc, DESM, FRCVS, born in London on September 8, 1927, is the outstanding fourth child London Doctor George Rosedale.

His colleagues in Rossdales wrote that he "may be one of the first practitioners to accept'evidence-based medicine' before the term'evidence-based medicine' was invented."

Rosedale has been interested in horses since he was six, and he wanted to be a jockey. In 1948, he entered the Royal Veterinary College, first in Camden Town and then Streetley near Reading. He became a member of the Royal Veterinary College in 1952 and spent two years in mixed practice in Rye, Sussex.

Rosedale married Jill Clifton in 1954 and they have two sons and a daughter.

Around this time, he participated in peer-to-peer competitions and achieved some success. He later bought a thoroughbred mare and kept her in the stallions of Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket, which led him to practice with Reynolds, Leader, Day and Crowhurst in Racetown.

The Rosedales started a new business in Newmarket in 1959 and established the Rosedale Law Firm with Michael Hunter in 1961. The clinic now has more than 50 veterinarians, an equine hospital, diagnostic center and pathology laboratory, and has branches in Hertfordshire and Lambourne. In 2002, at the age of 75, he retired from a partnership.

Rosedale is a founding member of the British Equine Veterinary Association and served as chairman in 1976.

During his early career as a stallion veterinarian, Rossdale became a leader in equine perinatal science as a scientific discipline, and this inspired research collaborations around the world.

Rosedale obtained FRCVS through a thesis in 1967, and a PhD from Cambridge University in 1985 based on a thesis published in the peer-reviewed literature. He received honorary doctorates from the University of Berne, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Sydney.

From 1980 to 2011, he served as the editor of Equine Veterinary Journal, ensuring its place in the top 10 of the world's veterinary journals. In 1986, he founded Equine Veterinary Education and established it as a leading journal for horse industry practitioners.

Rosedale's contributions to scientific research have been widely published; he is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers. Other books include The Horse's Health from AZ, co-authored with Sue Wreford, Equine Studfarm Medicine, editor of Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners, and many other books.

Rosedale was elected to the Horse Research Hall of Fame of the American Horse Industry Practitioners Association and is a founding member of the International Equine Breeding Symposium, which has been held every four years since 1974.

Rossdale is one of the founding board members of the RCVS Equine Medicine Certificate and Diploma. He was awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Berne, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Sydney. In 1996, Rosedale received the OBE for Equine Veterinary Science Services. The Royal Veterinary College awarded him a scholarship, and the Thoroughbred Breeders Association awarded him a bronze medal in Devon in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to the British thoroughbred breeding industry. In 2018, Rossdale won the BEVA Horse Welfare Award.

Jane Rosedale died in 1999 and Peter married Mary Sharkey. She took care of him after a stroke in 2020, which left him in a wheelchair.

The remains of Petrosdale are Mary, his sons Simon and Anthony, daughter Sally, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
