When the 2021 Midwest Pork Conference held a one-day program at the Boone County Fair in Lebanon, Indiana, on Tuesday, December 7, the booth of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine represented Purdue University Veterinary Hospital and Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL). The Midwest Pork Conference is an annual event that includes annual economic updates, educational conferences on important issues for pork producers, specific trade shows for pigs, and industry exchange opportunities.

The meeting was held as a face-to-face event and attracted more than 300 attendees. The PVM booth focused on the ADDL service and the range of tests it can perform, as well as preparations for a possible African swine fever test if there is an outbreak of African swine fever in the United States. The booth also displayed the latest pictures of the new hospital facilities that are about to be completed and provided information about the hospital's recruitment of more staff.

The Midwest Pork Conference is designed for pork producers and industry members and includes nine breakout sessions, covering topics ranging from animal viability issues to tax laws, recruitment, safety, and emerging swine diseases. The popular trade show has 60 suppliers. The PVM booth was coordinated by Kelly Dold, Marketing and Communications Manager at the Veterinary Hospital and ADDL.

Dr. Craig Bowen, Assistant Director of ADDL, stated that conference participants are important recipients of ADDL services. "The pig industry is the focus of the diagnostic and testing services we provide," said Dr. Bowen. "The main mission of ADDL is to provide diagnostic support for animal health and food supply safety. This role is particularly important for Indiana’s important swine and poultry industry. Participating in the Midwest Pork Conference is our emphasis on our efforts to support pork producers. They are a major contributor to Indiana’s economy.”
